About Hush
New York Professional Soundproofing Company
Professional Soundproofing and Noise Control by Hush
Hush is a professional soundproofing company based in New York City. We specialize exclusively in noise and vibration control for residential, commercial, and professional buildings where performance, discretion, and technical accuracy matter.
As a soundproofing company, our work combines acoustical consulting, analysis, and hands on construction. We focus on how sound actually moves through buildings, then design and implement assemblies that address those conditions directly.
Professional soundproofing is not one of many services we offer. It is the foundation of our practice.
Leadership in Building Acoustics and Professional Soundproofing
Founder and Acoustical Consultant
Hush was founded by Ned Shatzer, an Acoustical Consultant whose work spans measurement, modeling, and execution across residential, commercial, and mechanical environments. His practice is grounded in Building Acoustics and focused on qualified performance rather than theoretical assumptions alone.
Measurement and Acoustic Analysis
Acoustical analysis is conducted using Brüel and Kjær measurement equipment, including Class 1 sound level meters and a calibrated dodecahedron sound source to evaluate spatial sound behavior, transmission characteristics, and sound energy distribution under controlled conditions.
Room Acoustics and Reverberation Control
Room acoustics are evaluated through RT60 measurements, allowing reverberation behavior to be quantified and adjusted for clarity, speech intelligibility, and critical listening. These measurements guide the placement and balance of absorbers and diffusers, ensuring that studios and home theater environments maintain appropriate liveliness without excessive damping.
Building Acoustics and Assembly Design
For building assemblies, acoustical modeling software is used to study wall systems prior to construction. This includes evaluating STC performance of wall partitions, understanding how flanking paths through adjacent structural elements influence overall transmission loss, and determining how assembly composition affects sound isolation in real buildings.
Vibration, Structure Borne Noise, and Low Frequency Control
Vibration and structure borne noise are evaluated using accelerometers, particularly in projects involving low frequency excitation from subwoofers, mechanical equipment, and rotating systems. These measurements help identify resonance, buzz, and vibration transmitted through rigid connections rather than airborne paths.
Materials, Damping, and Mechanical Properties
Material selection is informed by mechanical properties such as bulk modulus and rigidity, especially where impact damping and vibration control are required. Viscoelastic compounds are incorporated where appropriate to increase damping and reduce energy transfer within wall assemblies without unnecessary increases in thickness.
Research, Testing, and ASTM E90 Laboratory Work
To advance this work, Ned has developed an ASTM E90 compliant laboratory focused specifically on transmission loss testing of wall assemblies for Building Acoustics. The lab is used to evaluate partition configurations under controlled conditions, examining how mass distribution, rigidity, damping behavior, and boundary conditions influence airborne sound transmission.
This research supports the development of space efficient acoustic assemblies, with the goal of improving sound isolation performance while preserving usable square footage in acoustic assemblies.
Mechanical Systems and Infrastructure Noise
Beyond residential environments, this expertise extends to elevator pulley systems, mechanical pump rooms, boilers, and HVAC equipment, where airborne noise, vibration, and duct borne transmission must be addressed simultaneously. Solutions often include isolation strategies, mass loading, and the creation of acoustical sound mazes within ductwork to control noise without restricting airflow.
How This Defines Hush
This technical foundation defines how Hush approaches professional soundproofing. Measurement guides design. Design guides construction. Performance is evaluated in situ.
Our Focus
Noise in urban buildings is complex. Sound travels through walls, ceilings, floors, and structural connections in ways that require more than surface treatments or off the shelf products.
Hush approaches professional soundproofing with a clear understanding of building construction and sound transmission. Each project begins with an evaluation of noise sources and transmission paths, followed by systems designed to reduce airborne noise, impact noise, and vibration based on real building conditions.
Our focus is to deliver sound isolation solutions that perform consistently over time, not temporary or cosmetic improvements.
Engineering Approach
Hush operates as a professional soundproofing company with an engineering-led approach. Our work is grounded in acoustical consulting, field experience, and performance based design principles that address airborne noise, impact noise, and structural vibration.
Assembly Performance
Effective soundproofing depends on the performance of the full wall, ceiling, or floor assembly. We design systems that combine mass, isolation, and damping using double stud or isolated framing, dense gypsum layers, viscoelastic compounds, mineral wool insulation, and resilient mounting hardware.
Flanking and Noise Paths
In dense New York buildings, noise rarely travels through a single surface. We account for flanking transmission through adjacent walls, ceilings, floors, and rigid connections, addressing parasitic noise paths that often undermine basic soundproofing treatments.
Controlled Installation Process
Soundproofing performance is sensitive to execution. Our installations follow defined sequencing, air sealing protocols, and fastening methods to maintain isolation and prevent structural short circuits that reduce system effectiveness.
Building Acoustical Analysis
Each project begins with an evaluation of the existing structure, including framing type, slab conditions, mechanical penetrations, and likely flanking paths. Soundproofing assemblies are selected and adapted based on how sound is traveling through the building.
Measured, Repeatable Results
Our methods are repeatable because they are based on established acoustical behavior rather than trial and error. The consistency of our results has positioned Hush as a trusted soundproofing company for apartment to apartment noise control and complex residential conditions.

Installation and Execution
Skilled, Multidisciplinary Builders
Hush’s work is defined as much by execution as it is by design. Our installation team is composed of highly skilled, multifaceted builders with backgrounds in carpentry, custom fabrication, and complex alterations within occupied buildings. They are trained specifically for acoustical construction, where tolerances are tight and workmanship directly affects performance.
Precision in the Details
In soundproofing, minor gaps, rigid bridges, or poorly treated penetrations can compromise an entire assembly. Our team is trained to identify and resolve these conditions during installation, maintaining continuity of isolation, airtightness, and damping throughout the build.
Training, Experience, and Accountability
This level of execution requires years of focused training. Our installers are compensated to reflect the technical demands of the work and the responsibility that comes with building assemblies where performance is critical. Precision is not rushed or improvised. It is executed deliberately.
Collaborative Problem Solving
Collaboration is central to how Hush operates. Each project begins with a clearly defined problem. Ned Shatzer establishes the core acoustical objective, and the team works collectively to refine the solution. Input from field experience, fabrication constraints, and construction sequencing informs the final approach. The strongest solution moves forward, without ego.
