Door Soundproofing
Door Soundproofing
Door soundproofing is the fastest way to lower hallway noise and improve privacy in NYC apartments, offices, and hotels. In practice, most “door noise” is not the door leaf—it’s the air gaps at the perimeter and the under-door opening. Therefore, we treat the door as an opening system: seal the jambs and head, close the undercut, and tune the closing so the seals compress every time.
Installed Seal Package: $1,440 per door (automatic door bottom + door perimeter seal). This service targets leakage first for measurable noise reduction and sound reduction, without forcing a full door replacement when it isn’t needed.
Common NYC door noise problems
- Hallway voices: corridor activity becomes your unit’s noise floor.
- Lobby spill: elevator and entry zones transmit through undercuts and latch gaps.
- Office privacy: speech intelligibility stays too high across a leaky opening.
- Misalignment: the door “closes,” but it doesn’t compress the seal line.
What we check before we scope the fix
First, we confirm the dominant path: perimeter, undercut, or the door leaf itself. Next, we verify latch engagement and closing force, because a seal that doesn’t compress is just decoration. Finally, we look at adjacent construction. For example, corridor noise can flank through ceilings and returns, so door work is often paired with wall soundproofing or ceiling soundproofing when the building conditions demand it.
If the issue is mainly inside-the-room harshness, that’s echo control. See Acoustic Panels.
Perimeter Seals + Automatic Door Bottom
Most NYC entry doors have two predictable leak zones: the perimeter and the undercut. Because sound rides on airflow, small gaps behave like a large opening acoustically. Therefore, the highest-impact door soundproofing scope is sealing the jambs/head and closing the under-door gap with an automatic door bottom. This is the foundation of hallway noise reduction and apartment door soundproofing NYC clients actually feel.

Automatic door bottom styles
- Under-door (recessed): cleaner look, protected mechanism, when the door construction allows.
- Surface-mounted: faster retrofit when thickness or site conditions limit recessed hardware.
What makes sealing work (and what breaks it)
First, the door has to close consistently. If the latch doesn’t pull the leaf into position, the seal line will leak. In addition, floors are rarely perfectly flat, so the bottom drop has to be tuned to seal without dragging. Finally, we avoid “over-sealing” that causes the door to bounce and never latch. When the door is unstable or warped, sealing helps, but the leaf may still transmit—at that point we recommend a full soundproof door system.
If the situation is sensitive (board issues, disputes, or recurring complaints), measurement keeps the scope clean. See Acoustic Report.
Seals vs. Door Replacement (and Fire Ratings)
Sealing is the right first move for most doors. However, some openings need more than seals. If the door is hollow-core, lightweight, or unstable, the leaf itself vibrates and transmits sound. In addition, louder environments (music, bass, mixed-use adjacency) can exceed what a retrofit seal package can realistically deliver. Therefore, we escalate to a full door system: higher-mass leaf, stable frame behavior, perimeter gasketing, and an automatic door bottom tuned to the floor conditions.
Signs you need a full soundproof door
- The door feels light or “drummy” when you knock on it
- It’s visibly warped, or the latch doesn’t pull it tight
- You need privacy at higher volume (music, studio, commercial)
- Seals help, but the room still feels exposed

Fire-rated openings
Many NYC doors are part of a fire-rated opening, especially in corridors and commercial spaces. For that reason, sound upgrades must be coordinated so the opening remains appropriate for the application. While sound ratings like STC are helpful as a reference, real-world results still depend on installation, sealing, and flanking paths around the opening.
How We Work
Hush NYC provides established soundproofing systems to reduce noise and vibration transmission in residential and professional environments.
Expertise and Experience
Our work is proven by years of focused soundproofing projects in New York City buildings. We approach each project with a deep understanding of how sound behaves in real structures, informed by consulting, testing, and hands on construction.
Local Knowledge
Working extensively in New York City buildings gives us a clear understanding of common construction types and recurring noise paths. That familiarity allows us to anticipate challenges and address them efficiently during installation.
Customized Solutions
Every space presents different constraints. We use established soundproofing systems and adjust them to the conditions of the building, tailoring each solution while relying on methods that have a strong track record.
Exceptional Customer Service
Our process is structured, transparent, and collaborative from start to finish. Clear communication and follow through are central to how we work, and client feedback through our reviews reflects that consistency.
High-Quality Materials:
Soundproofing performance depends on the integrity of the assemblies used. Hush NYC relies on materials and systems that have demonstrated long term reliability, selecting composite components based on data and function rather than marketing claims.
Proven Track Record
Our experience spans a wide range of residential and select commercial projects throughout the city. The results of that work are reflected in repeat clients, referrals, and long standing professional relationships.
Our Clients
Client partners include residential, commercial, and institutional organizations that rely on precise soundproofing and acoustical execution.
