Mechanical noise coordination
In hotel soundproofing, many “mystery” complaints are also mechanical. If guest rooms sit under roof units or near risers, treat the equipment and the path—then validate in the finished space.
We also set a background-noise target with NC or RC curves. Noise Criteria and Room Criteria rate HVAC noise in each octave band, so the spec says exactly how quiet a guest room must be.

For hotels, noise is a business problem. Thin walls between rooms, gaps under corridor doors, banging pipes and street noise through windows are among the most common reasons guests leave poor reviews. In New York, where many hotels occupy older buildings or sit above busy streets, hotel soundproofing has a direct effect on ratings and repeat bookings.
So we usually focus on four areas. First, demising walls between rooms, upgraded with decoupled layers and sealed outlets; wall ratings come from lab tests under ASTM E90. Second, corridor doors with full perimeter seals and drop seals. Third, floor-ceiling assemblies for footsteps, rated by tests such as ASTM E492. Fourth, windows and facade, where HUD’s Noise Guidebook explains how exterior noise is assessed. For banquet halls and event spaces, we also isolate amplified sound from guest floors.
Lab numbers are only half the story, though. Field ratings such as ASTC (ASTM E336) and AIIC (ASTM E1007) measure the finished room, so they include flanking and workmanship. As a result, field results usually land several points below the lab rating. So we recommend field-testing a finished sample room before a full rollout.
